Weekend Inspiration - Feb 14 & 15, 2009
I've been out and about this weekend so did not get this posted yesterday. Thought I'd change things up and post something from my own bible study here today. I'm linked up to Crosswalk.com and doing their Read through the Bible in a Year program. The verses below are from yesterday's lesson which I found most meaningful.
Scripture: Luke 5: 1 – 9 New American Standard Translation
1. Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret;
2. and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake ; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets.
3. And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat.
4. When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch."
5. Simon answered and said, "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets."
6. When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; 7. so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink.
8. But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus' feet, saying, "Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!"
9. For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken;
Thoughts: Often I'm just like Simon, I tell the Lord I've already done something He is telling me to do and sometimes I'm not even as obedient at Simon in that I don't follow through with the Lords promting but continue to try and do things my way. When I do follow the Lord's instructions, like Simon, I'm amazed and ashamed at my sinful nature. Why it surprises me I don't know since more than anyone but God, I know myself and know just how much of a sinner I am. The thing that's even more amazing in my mind is that the Lord wants to have anything to do with me at all...yet He does, for which I'm eternally grateful.
Prayer for the weekend: Father, continue to prompt me, not just to reveal Your blessings but to show me how I need to live and allow me to be a blessing to others. Show me Your blessings and allow my heart to be cleaned by Your love and grace as I study Your word and allow You to work in my life. In Your precious Son Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
